It all started when…

I began crocheting Mandalas and Fractal Shapes as a method to meditate and I ended loving them! One day, I thought to attach one Mandala to my wheelchair but I was a little hesitant thinking on safety challenges. For example, the yarn getting in my way to push the chair or to do simple tasks. In addition, I thought people could think that I have a "chip on my shoulder". Well, I would not know until I try, right?

Well, one day, I crocheted a Mandala in a hoop and showed it to a large group of crocheters in Facebook. The post got thousands of likes and several comments where people indicated me having a great idea attaching the Mandala to my wheels. The Mandala was larger than my wheel, it was not attached, but I guess it looks like it was.

I promised to the members that I was going to show some of the Mandalas I made for my chair in another post.

A few days later I posted some pictures showing my Mandalas attached to my wheels... and the response was fantastic. Some even asked me for permission to use my idea, others suggested to create a website, others to write patterns, etc.

That is one of the reasons I created this web to share my crocheted Mandalas or Fractals Shapes to the world. The other reason is to teach how to make them because a Mandala or Fractal Shape to be attached to a wheelchair, needs close attention to mobility needs. It is not just adding a happy image to the rim. It is about making the person happy and safe.

Mobility needs

These pictures show a few mobility issues that we need to look into before crocheting and attaching Mandala. This observation will help avoiding the creation of an unsafe item.

I can grab the handrim because the yarn is not on my way...

I can push the chair using the handrim...

The yarn is flexible enough to more out of my hand if for some reason I grabbed it...

The yarn is soft to the touch...

I have enough space to grab the wheel if I need to remove it...

The yarn is flexible, soft, but resistant to allow enough space for my fingers or hand...

This Mandala style I attached to the handrim... never to the wheel
